Sacred Heart Greenwich Celebrates Earth Day 2026 with More Than 25 Student Workshops and Signature Programs

Sacred Heart Greenwich marked Earth Day 2026 with a dynamic, schoolwide program featuring more than 25 unique K–12 workshops designed to engage students in eco-conscious, hands-on learning. Spanning a wide range of topics, the day’s programming  invited students to explore environmental issues through interactive experiences that promote awareness, reflection, and meaningful action across the School’s beautiful 110-acre campus.

Rooted in the school’s mission and the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education, Earth Day at Sacred Heart Greenwich reflects a deep commitment to Goal III: “Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to a social awareness which impels to action.” This call challenges students to accept responsibility for the care of God’s creation, practice thoughtful stewardship of the Earth’s resources, and work toward solutions to the climate crisis.

“Earth Day at Sacred Heart Greenwich is more than a moment of awareness, it is an opportunity for students at every grade level to engage directly with the responsibility we share for our common home,” said Michael F. Baber, President of Sacred Heart Greenwich. “We are grateful to Ms. Chris Gerrity and Mrs. Marnie McLaughlin for their thoughtful efforts to create hands-on learning that will inspire our students to not only understand environmental challenges, but to become thoughtful stewards and leaders who will make a meaningful difference.”

The day began with an Opening Ceremony celebrating creativity and sustainability. Students showcased upcycled fashion designs, modeling garments created from repurposed materials. The Lower School Bottle Blower Band made its debut, performing with instruments crafted from recycled bottles under the direction of Upper School Musical Director Sean Lowery.

Throughout the day, students participated in workshops focused on sustainability, conservation, and creative reuse. Signature experiences included a birds of prey demonstration by Skyhunters in Flight, offering an up-close look at hawks, owls, and falcons. Additional hands-on projects invited students to transform materials in imaginative ways, including creating a loom which repurposes recycled t-shirts; Plastic Posies, where students created artwork by turning discarded bottles into flowers. The proprietary Sacred Heart Greenwich Earth Day t-shirt design was a creative collaboration by Upper School art students. With each K-12 student encouraged to upcycle their own t-shirt this galvanizing effort united the school for the celebration on April 22, 2026.

As one of the few schools in the nation designated as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, Sacred Heart Greenwich’s campus provides a natural setting for this work, reinforcing the School’s commitment to environmental stewardship and ecological awareness.

Earth Day 2026 at Sacred Heart Greenwich reflected the school’s dedication to educating the whole child—empowering students with the knowledge, skills, and sense of responsibility to care for the world around them.
