Sacred Heart Greenwich – Head of School Job Description
The Head of School at Sacred Heart Greenwich embodies and articulates the School’s mission for all aspects of the School’s program consistent with the mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart. In keeping with the School’s mission, the Head of School fosters the practices, traditions, and relationships that strengthen the School’s culture and its commitment to excellence. The Head of School is the sole employee of the Board of Trustees and is responsible for the overall management and performance of the school, in accordance with the Bylaws of the School and the Board’s policies. The Head of School is the spokesperson for the School with all its internal and external constituencies including students, parents, faculty, staff, alumnae, neighbors, business community, governmental agencies, and local, state, regional and national educational organizations and accrediting agencies.
The Head of School is responsible for achieving excellence in all areas of the School’s operation and for ensuring the continued vibrancy of the School in the future, consistent with the Goals and Criteria of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Specific responsibilities to achieve these objectives include:
- Lead the effective functioning of all areas of the School. These include, but are not limited to: academic programs, extracurricular activities, disciplinary systems, college placement, facilities, marketing, enrollment management, financial management and development, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations and emergency procedures. Ensure compliance with all laws, board policies and civil regulations.
- Work collaboratively with the three division heads in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools to implement consistent strategy, curriculum development, and procedures.
- Administer all the programs of the School in a manner consistent with the School’s mission and in accordance with the Goals and Criteria and the School’s Board of Trustees. Participate in regular review of the School by the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals and Criteria.
- In conjunction with the Board of Trustees, develop, execute, track and review a multi-year strategic plan that will ensure academic and organizational excellence and compliance with the Goals and Criteria. The Strategic Plan should be reviewed and updated regularly.
- Ensure that School goals and objectives are clearly articulated to all segments of the School community including administrators, faculty, students, parents, alumnae and other constituencies.
- Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students, faculty, and staff for academic performance, spiritual development, and core values. Continuously evaluate and improve programs and participate in relevant accreditation processes to ensure outstanding student achievement levels.
- Proactively contribute to the success of the Society of the Sacred Heart and the national and international Network of the Sacred Heart.
- Give clear spiritual, educational, and moral leadership and provide for outstanding supporting academic and extra-curricular programs.
- Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, and school personnel. Establish a professional rapport and respectful relationships with students and with faculty and staff. Serve as a role model for students, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and intellectual and spiritual development. Encourage all faculty and staff to do the same.
- Develop and maintain effective means of communication within the School and between the School and its many constituencies, including students, families, faculty, staff, alumnae, volunteers and the overall community.
- Communicate regularly with parents, seeking their support and advice; create a cooperative relationship to support the students.
- Collaborate with the faculty and staff in ensuring the continuous improvement of the School. Encourage an open environment that supports creativity and the free and responsible exchange of ideas.
Though many of the other responsibilities of the Head of School are properly delegated, the Head of School has ultimate and overall responsibility for achieving excellence in the areas of Board relations, curriculum and instruction, student life, business affairs, admission, and advancement. Specific responsibilities in these areas include the following.
- Serve as ex-officio, non-voting, member of the Board and all Board committees. The Head of School reports to the Board, consistent with the Bylaws of the School.
- Establish an excellent working relationship with the Board of Trustees; proactively participate in committees and other board activities. Provide the Board with appropriate levels of information so that they may effectively discharge their responsibilities as Trustees.
- Communicate with the Board regularly about the strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and opportunities facing the School, as well as the needs, successes, and general operation of the School.
- Keep the Board informed of all matters relating to the School through reports at Board meetings and immediate communication following major School events or incidents.
- Provide data to assist and improve Board decision-making, governance, and oversight.
- Make recommendations to the Board for approval of the operating and capital budgets, including all categories of income and expenditures.
- Seek direction from the Board on new initiatives.
- Assist the Board chair and executive committee in setting Board and committee meeting agendas and discussion topics.
- Propose annual goals for his/her performance for Board review and approval.
- Provide documentation materials for the Board to use in his/her evaluation.
- Ensure that Board records and minutes are properly filed and otherwise assist the Board in its work as requested.
Curriculum and Instruction
- Uphold the academic and ethical standards of the School, which are focused on the development of the whole person – heart, mind, and will.
- Hire, supervise, evaluate, and as appropriate, promote or dismiss, School administrators and faculty and staff members.
- Foster professionalism, collegiality, and ethical conduct in the faculty.
- Provide for the professional development of the faculty, both in and out of School.
- Develop an on-going program of administrative and faculty training, supervision and evaluation, which will develop the competencies required to realize School goals and objectives now and in the future.
- Proactively develop leadership talent for the future of the School and the Network.
- Stimulate and lead the continuous improvement of teaching and learning at the School.
- Maintain an awareness of the latest advances in educational research and seek opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in curriculum and pedagogy.
- Supervise the selection of curricula, class schedules, assessments, graduation requirements, and all aspects of the School’s academic program.
- Ensure the consistency of the curriculum and the academic program with the teachings of the Catholic Church and the mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart.
- Optimize the physical learning environment and the use of technology in all instructional areas.
- Promote a healthy student culture in and out of school.
- Provide for religious and character education in keeping with the mission of the School.
- Administer the School’s discipline policies and standards of conduct.
- Supervise the School’s support systems, such as counseling, academic support, before- and after-school programs, college counseling, and health and wellness.
- Supervise the selection of student activities and extracurricular opportunities.
- Establish procedures for timely and helpful reporting of student progress to parents.
- Ensure effective implementation of school safety programs including building security, emergency procedures, transportation regulations, etc.
Business, Finance and Plant Operations
- Understand and supervise the business functions of the School, including budgeting; monitoring and reporting revenue, expenses, investments, cash flow, and endowment; maintenance of appropriate records; and assisting the School’s auditors.
- Oversee all employment and human relations matters, such as contracts, salaries, benefits, job assignments, job orientation, performance evaluation, retentions and dismissals, personnel records, employee handbooks, etc.
- Establish procedures that create and maintain attractive, organized, functional, healthy, clean and safe facilities with proper attention to the visual, acoustic and contemplative values of the environment. Oversee the maintenance and cleaning of the buildings, grounds, and all plant operations including vehicles, grounds, etc.
- Plan and execute all major capital purchases, repairs, and building projects.
Admissions, Marketing and Financial Aid
- Supervise and assist the admissions functions of the School, including recruitment programs, internal marketing, external outreach, website development and maintenance, information dissemination, and applicant testing and interviewing.
- Supervise the admissions decision-making process, including administration of the School’s financial aid program.
Advancement and Fundraising
- Plan and optimize the School’s fundraising programs such as the annual fund, capital campaigns, planned giving, and major events.
- Supervise the School’s development efforts in identifying, cultivating, thanking, and communicating with past and prospective donors.
- Oversee the School’s relations with its alumnae including development and maintenance of the alumnae database, communications programs, and special events.
- Supervise all volunteer efforts such as those donated by individuals or the Parents’ Association, Young Alumnae Council, Alumnae Board etc., all of which report to the Head of School or his/her designee.

- We require a practicing Catholic with a vibrant faith who will serve as the spiritual leader of our Sacred Heart community.
- Capacity to comprehend the value of a Catholic community imbued by the charism of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and the spirit of the Society of the Sacred as captured in the Goals and Criteria; ability to embrace, model, and promote the School’s commitment to Sacred Heart values and the Goals and Criteria.
- Understanding of, appreciation for, and capacity to communicate effectively the teachings of the Catholic Church, while also having a genuine respect for religious freedom and the faith and religious beliefs of others.
- Demonstrated distinction in a wide variety of areas involved with successfully leading a school: teacher recruitment, development, evaluation, and retention; curriculum review and evaluation; extra-curricular activities; college placement; volunteer management; marketing; fundraising, facilities management; student support services; enrollment management; financial management.
- Hands-on leadership and management experience that demonstrates vision and courage and the ability to communicate and lead effective change. Self-motivated individual with excellent ability to work collaboratively with the full range of school constituencies.
- Track record of success in recruiting, developing, and retaining high performing and diverse faculty and staff; works to support and facilitate collaboration and pursuit of professional excellence.

- Experience developing effective working relationships with Trustees. Experience in strategic planning, organizational development, and problem solving. Track record of success in fundraising; experience with marketing.
- Commitment to and skill in building and strengthening a diverse and inclusive community consistent with a Catholic identity and the ability to navigate diverse cultural and social situations with ease.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills and a record of effective interaction with parents, students, teachers and administrators. Excellent presentation skills when addressing students, faculty and staff, parents and the community in general.
- Experience integrating research, data analysis, and metrics to help define and achieve desired outcomes or benchmarks of excellence.
- Enthusiastic and articulate advocate for the advantages of all-girls education, best practices for teaching girls, and standards of excellence in programming for girls.

- Minimum of five years of teaching experience and instructional leadership, preferably in an independent school; minimum of five years of administrative leadership or experience is preferred.
