Head of School Pamela Juan Hayes ’64 announces June 2020 Retirement

GREENWICH, CT (June 10, 2019) -- Sacred Heart Greenwich Head of School Pamela Juan Hayes today announced her plans to retire following the end of the next academic year, in June 2020. Hayes was the first lay Head of School in Sacred Heart’s rich 170-year history. Founded on an unparalleled combination of academic rigor and faith-based values, the School is known for its award-winning athletics, best-in-class facilities and commitment to community service. Sacred Heart has long attracted top students and faculty to its expansive 110-acre campus for the education of girls from pre-school through 12th grade. Concurrently, incoming Chair of the Board of Trustees Kathleen O’Connor, who is both an alumna and parent of current students, outlined the Search Committee process for Sacred Heart’s next Head of School for the community today.

In her letter to the Sacred Heart community, Hayes shared the following: “Having been raised in the Sacred Heart network, I know the cores values of the School, guided by the Goals and Criteria, will live on no matter who serves as the School’s next head. During my tenure, I have had the privilege of working with the very best faculty and staff. Each day they inspire such intellectual curiosity in our students and truly cultivate an atmosphere of wise freedom. I continue to be bolstered by the tremendous support and rich history of our alumnae, parents, Board and the Network. The Sacred Heart community is unlike any other.”

Christopher Ryan, Board Chair, and Kathleen O’Connor, Incoming Board Chair said, “We are deeply grateful to Pam her ten years of service here as Head of School and her more than 45 years of service to the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. We hope you will wish her well as she wraps up her final year with us in the 2019-2020 academic year.”

Under Hayes’ leadership, Sacred Heart has experienced substantial improvements to its curriculum and facilities. Hayes led the creation a one-of-a-kind online learning environment in SophieConnect and facilitated the purchase of the School’s land from the Society of the Sacred Heart, which allowed for significant upgrades to the School’s facilities from world-class athletic fields to a new dining room, from library and classroom enhancements to observatory updates. The School plans to celebrate Hayes’ leadership and vision during the 2019-2020 school year.

The Search Committee, led by current parent and Board of Trustees member Thomas Lehrman, has committed to keeping the community informed about the search process at regular intervals. Communications will be shared on the Sacred Heart Greenwich website: shgreenwich.org.
