The Diversity Club is open to all Upper School students. The mission of the club is to provide a comfortable space for students to discuss issues regarding race, socio-economic status, gender and sexual orientation from both a personal and community perspective.
Intersections, a student-led group founded in 2018, aims to foster conversation on a wide range of topics generated by student interest. This forum constitutes an important precursor to goal three -- “social awareness which impels to action” -- in the way that it provides a space to become aware of and explore social issues before any action is considered. Taking at its core the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the forum follows the spirit of Christ’s message of radical love, which compels us to be attentive to those on the margins of society. In its parallel goal to build community, the forum provides students with tools to discuss difficult subjects in order to cultivate empathy and compassion even as we differ in opinions.
Hearts Together is a Middle School group committed to educating ourselves and others to accept and respect each other for who we are and where we come from. We strive to learn about issues that affect our community members, recognize privilege, and promote acceptance, love, and respect.
The Equity, Inclusion & Justice team worked this past year to educate the Sacred Heart community on and coordinate around issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. The EIJ team worked with student groups like Hearts Together in the Middle School and Intersections and Diversity Club in the Upper School to give students the opportunity to have difficult conversations about equity, inclusion, and justice issues and more. The EIJ team hosted lunchtime workshops for faculty and staff on issues like inclusive language and the question of "diversity vs. inclusion," managed the faculty's CRTL diversity cohort, and led division meetings to help faculty explore the role of identity in their work and look at issues of access and privilege.
